New tattoos and its going great

Lots of exciting things this week.  First, my husband and I spent last Saturday getting tattoos!  I already had a small one on my ankle, he had none.  He ended up getting a phoenix on his chest (pretty big for a first tattoo, I was so proud of him!)  I got the absolute most gorgeous dragon on my hip, and a girly flower/swirl design behind my ear.  We're going to go back and get a couple more in the weeks to come.  I love them so much :)

In other news, the diet thing is going pretty well!  This has been a hard week and I feel like I haven't made as much progress as other weeks, but I needed to lose 8.5 lbs by Feb. 8th to stay on track for my 150-in-18-months goal, and I'm at a little over 9 right now.  So, things are looking good!  I can't exercise for the moment because the hip tattoo is very large and taking awhile to heal, but I'm sure things will speed up once that heals completely.

Inspiration!

A woman on one of the Weight Watchers boards celebrated her one-year WW anniversary today.  She's lost 157 pounds in the last year.  And she only had 3 gains in the entire year too.  I want to be her.

I've been freaking out over having to lose 150 lbs in 18 months--but maybe it's possible after all!

Her story gave me the strength to eat a low-fat yogurt for a non-hungry snack instead of a package of off-brand oreos, so perhaps I'm off to a good start after all :)

I'm back!

Hello everyone,
After a long hiatus, I'm back!  A lot has happened in my life in the last year, including leaving grad school, moving twice, having a baby, some rather serious legal troubles for a loved one that caused my life to crumble as well, and a few other things.  But I've picked myself back up and re-committed.  And it's a little early to tell, but I think it's different this time.

Different how, you might ask?  Well, I woke up on New Year's Day and I was just...done.  Done being fat.  Done being embarrassed.  Done checking the weight limits of everything to make sure I can fit.  Done not participating because I won't fit in the seats/on the rides, etc.  I'll be 31 this month and I'm just done with this part of my life.

I know this sounds like what every fat person says at the start of a diet right before they fall off the wagon.  But it's been 18 days and I've been on-plan every single day, which is a bit of a record for me.  I feel good about it.

Also, I joined Healthy Wage, and a few Diet Bets.  My personal healthy wage will reward me with--wait for it--$7500 if I weigh 150 lbs less by July 1 of 2017.  That's  a lot of money, and a lot of weight--roughly 2 lbs a week.  I don't know if 2 pounds is sustainable every week, but the thought of the money has already had me making better choices.

I'm also back on mental health medication.  Right now, Lexapro and Wellbutrin.  The appetite suppressing effects aren't as awesome this time around, but the control they give me is--I can eat like a normal person without a massive eating disorder, which is amazing.

So everyone, wish me luck!

Falling off the wagon, sex, and grad school

As it might have been easy to guess by my lack of posting, I've fallen off the wagon.  I haven't gained weight, but my total weight loss since the beginning of January is something like a measly 4 pounds.  Not great, but I am trying really hard and not giving up this time, which is what I have done at this point all the other times.

There have been a couple of issues that have derailed me.  First, the more serious one.  A decade ago, I was sexually assaulted by someone I thought was a friend.  It was a complicated situation--definitely not a black and white, open and shut case--and as a result, I never reported it.  It had a lot to do with mental illness, vulnerability, manipulation, coercion...a lot of negative things.  Sort of along the lines of a person who is drunk not actually being able to consent (which, okay, I've also experienced) but somehow emotionally much worse because it was more involved...weeks and months worth of grooming and manipulating someone who clearly needed help into the position the attacker wanted me in. It's hard to explain.  My point is, I moved on with my life and after a couple of years it felt like everything went back to normal (you know, plus 150 extra pounds and an aversion to having anyone outside of my family touch me or stand in my personal space).

But now, at school, there's this guy.  A perfectly nice, probably totally innocent guy.  Who has a tendency to stand just a little too close to me.  And drops by my office just to visit.  And comes over after class to comfort me if the professor has upset me.  I'm sure its all perfectly innocent (though it does feel like he's flirting a bit which is pretty offensive considering I'm happily married, wear a prominent wedding ring, and talk about my husband a lot).  BUT, it reminds me of the guy in college in some weird way, and that has really messed with my head.  I ended up having a total breakdown over it last weekend.  In the middle of a very long talk with my husband as he tried to help me, it came to light that he has always considered me as a rape victim.  I've always hesitated to apply that label to myself because my experience wasn't your typical movie-style dragged-down-a-dark-alleyway violent rape.  But I have thought about it.  And somehow having a label for what happened--and validation that I wasn't just being overdramatic--was like a weight was lifted off of my shoulders that I've been carrying around for a decade.  What happened is still on my mind a lot.  But now it feels like maybe I'm beginning to integrate that experience into the happier, healthier I am now instead of trying to isolate and hide it away.  I don't know.  It feels like a step forward, though heaven knows what a psychologist would say about it.

The other thing is much less heavy, I promise.  Grad school.  It's awesome.  And SO HARD.  The amount of reading I have to do this semester is just insane, and its screwing with my workout schedule, my ability to cook instead of eating out, my energy levels, everything.  I'm going to have to find a balance but that hasn't happened yet.  It is kind of fun, though.  This week I turned in an assignment that legitimately used the phrase "revenge porn" and watched a movie with a class of graduate students that included two fairly explicit phone sex scenes.  The professor had talked up the movie a lot, warning us multiple times that there were a couple of really uncomfortable scenes that he wasn't even comfortable watching with his wife of 20 years.  I thought it was going to be something horribly perverse or terribly violent (in fact, I was worried that I would cause a scene by having to walk out if it was a rape scene).  But it turned out to be phone sex.  Soft-core porny phone sex, sure.  More explicit dialogue than you usually get in an R-rated movie, sure.  But...just not a huge deal.  Certainly not something that one wouldn't be comfortable watching with their spouse.  Because, um, if you have sex on a regular basis, then why should listening to a woman describe what she's feeling, and then listening to the female orgasm bother you?  It was a little uncomfortable for me because I was sitting next to a girl who is right out of undergrad and who is, I would bet, a virgin.  She was uncomfortable so that made me a little uncomfortable, but the actual adult material?  Just no big deal.  I'm not sure how to express that to the professor when he asks what I thought tomorrow, because really...if you can't even listen to soft-core porn with your wife, then, well....you know what?  Its none of my business.  I'll just leave it at I was very surprised that it was considered risque between married adults, and maybe not all marriages are as sexually adventurous as mine?  An interesting thought but really no polite way to go about collecting data.  Also no polite way to explain to my professor why I would like to study something like that.

Ah, this is totally off track.  Back to the topic at hand...weight loss.  I am going to try to get back on track this weekend.  If these last few weeks have shown me anything, its that the time I take to prepare food on the weekends is worth it.  If I wake up in the morning without a clear idea of what I'm having for breakfast and lunch, it just all goes to hell.  So, next week is another chance.  Good luck to me and everyone else who is fighting the good fight!

Exercise Routines

Lately I have been doing *great* on the exercise front.  This week I have worked out 6 out of 7 days.  There was one day when I only worked out for 30 minutes, but all of the others were between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes.  I love being able to switch back and forth between machines.

However, I do have some concerns.  I have plantar fascitis in my left foot.  It is very painful.  It has been getting better in the last six months because I've worn running shoes exclusively instead of nicer shoes (which, okay, is what my podiatrist recommended a year ago but I wasn't in the position to follow that advice when I was still in corporate America).  Even so, walking on the treadmill constantly has started to make the issue flare up again.  Not so bad that I want to collapse and cry (hello, me a year ago!), but enough of a twinge to give me a warning that I need to rethink how much I am pushing my body while I'm still carrying this much weight.

In addition, I've been on the weight watchers boards a lot and have seen several posts about people who have a lot of extra skin after losing large amounts of weight.  Granted some of these people started out heavier than I (400, even 500 lbs as compared to my 385), but some people who started at even less than me (350, 300, or less) have reported a loose skin problem after losing the weight.  I did a lot of reading on the subject and there's not a lot I can do on the genetics front.  I'm guessing my genetics do lean towards an extra skin issue, because after I had a c-section, I had an apron of fat on my belly, which I've never had before, even at 330 lbs.  It could just be something that was going to appear on my body no matter what after I got above my pre-pregnancy weight (even without the pregnancy and c-section) but it could also mean that my stomach area is always going to be an issue no matter my weight.  So, nothing I can do to change that.  I can, however, make sure that I lose weight at a slow and steady pace, and stay very well hydrated.

In addition, I can add strength training into my exercise regimen.  This has a few advantages.  Supposedly, it helps with the loose skin issue.  In addition, it will allow me to maybe cut my cardio back to every other day, and still get in movement that is good for my body on the "off" days.  I bought a strength training dvd off of Amazon, deliberately choosing one that doesn't include anything high-impact such as jumping rope.  I also bought a set of dumbbells and an extra-thick mat for floor work, since the only area large enough for this kind of exercise is my completely-tile-floor den.  I can't wait to try this out and see if it is as good of an addition to my routine as I think it will be!

Mmmm, guilt-free margherita pizza!

I am not a great cook, so I don't claim the credit for any recipe that I post here.  It is pretty much guaranteed that I got the recipe somewhere else, and I will try to credit/link to that original source.

With that being said, I cannot recommend enough the English muffin margherita pizzas I made last night.  I based the original recipe off of Rhonda35's recipe on allrecipes.com (see the original recipe here), but I made a few changes based on my own tastes and the recommendations of fellow weight watchers.  I had one and a half of these for dinner last night and was completely full.  Someone who wanted to spend less points on dinner could have just one, with a salad, and could use less cheese or use fat-free cheese (though I personally think that fat-free cheese just isn't worth it).  So without further ado, the world's best easy, fast, and portion-controlled margherita pizzas:

Serving size: 1

Ingredients:
1 English muffin
1 roma tomato
1/2 cup low-moisture, part-skim mozzarella cheese
Fresh garlic
Basil

Instructions:
Split the English muffin and then toast it.  While it is toasting, slice the tomato into generous slices.  Remove the muffin from the toaster, place the tomato slices on each half, face-up.  Top with cheese, garlic, and basil.  Move the two English muffin pizzas to a baking sheet (I sprayed mine with pam first) and bake at 375 for 10 minutes.

Points total for the two completed pizzas (each is 1/2 of the muffin with tomato, cheese, garlic, and basil): 8

I wish I had taken a picture, but I will definitely be doing these again so I will take one then.  My husband and daughter did theirs with jarred pizza sauce from the store and topped with sausage that I cooked up quickly.  I tasted theirs and they were fine, but nothing beats the taste of the warm, fresh tomato on the version I had.  Happy eating!

Weekly weigh-in

Today was a good weigh-in!  I lost 2 pounds this week.  Current weight: 357.  Yay!  I'm hoping subsequent weeks will show similar results, especially now that I'm working out.  Having two machines is AWESOME--you get bored with one, you just switch to the other!  I do get a lot more points for the bike than the treadmill, but I like the treadmill more since I can read on it.
